More Tips on Vacuum Packing

There are so many things about modern life we take for granted vacuum packing being one.

The freshness of food for one thing. And for help with that,  enter the vacuum sealer. This way you retain the freshness and flavour for 3 to 5 times longer than would otherwise be the case. If you were to store your food in an ordinary food container , the presence of atmospheric oxygen would cause the food to spoil.

Apart from seriously curtailing the ravages of micro-organisms, vacuum-sealing keeps flies and other germ-carriers at bay.

There are other considerations too. You wouldn’t expect to vacuum pack flesh foods without following that up with refrigeration. Spoiling would naturally result. A tad slower than would otherwise be the case but obviously spoil it would.

Vacuum Packing – Some Limitations

Another important point to realise is that not everything is preserved effectively by vacuum sealing. For example it’s known that you do yourself no favours vacuum-packing garlic or mushrooms amongst several other foods that are a no-no for the vacuum-seal treatment. It’s not The Universal Answer!

And there are some items that are extremely finicky to deal with. Putting it mildly. Vacuum-sealing roast coffee would come into that category. Roasted coffee beans can continue to give off gases after roasting. The amount depending on the degree of roasting, type of coffee…So there’s a trade off between preserved freshness and myriad other factors.

The true art of vacuum packing then has to do with this simplicity: don’t go at it blind. Don’t assume that what works for one product will work for another no matter how apparently similar they might be.

It’s easy to overlook the fact that spices – the humble spice – its reason for being had much to do with food preservation. Now we add spices as a way to tickle the palate. To add interest; and to tease the senses in other ways too.

So get practised with your favorite food first. From there expand your range: your versatility!
